Two Levels with Defined Training Areas
The fitness center is divided across two floors rather than condensed into a single room. Cardio equipment is positioned along a wall of tall windows, bringing in natural light throughout the day and creating clear sightlines across the upper level. The mezzanine overlooks the lower floor, keeping the space visually connected while separating training zones.
Strength equipment is organized into defined sections instead of being placed randomly throughout the room. Plate-loaded machines and selectorized equipment are grouped together, while free weights are arranged on racks along mirrored walls. This separation allows multiple residents to lift, train, or stretch at the same time without crowding.
Functional Space and Equipment Layout
The functional training area includes open floor space designed for impact and stability. Kettlebells and medicine balls are stored on accessible racks, and a mounted punching bag sits within its own zone to allow for striking drills without interfering with other equipment. Cardio machines feature built-in display screens mounted directly on the consoles. Equipment is spaced with walking room between machines, creating clear paths throughout the gym rather than narrow aisles.
Within our NCSU off-campus housing community, the two-story design, window exposure, and equipment variety create a fitness center that accommodates lifting sessions, cardio workouts, and functional training in one connected space. For students balancing labs, lectures, and part-time jobs around Raleigh, having a full workout setup on-site makes it easier to fit in training between campus commitments. Some residents stop in for a quick treadmill run before heading toward Centennial Campus, while others use the upstairs level for longer strength sessions after a full day at Talley Student Union or the library. Instead of driving across the city to find a gym, the space functions as part of the weekly routine, accessible whether it’s a short break between study blocks or a longer workout to reset after exams.
